If Chardeau did not exist, he would be invented !
Progressive arty-rock, spicy trippy pop or baroque pop-jazz fusion ? The irreductible does not care about labels and continues his creative madness to the opposite of marketing and buzz. Don’t believe the hype!
Certainly shifted, Chardeau is not like anyone. The look evokes jumble a futuristic Buffalo Bill, a surprising Gandalf (rock and leather), a SF adventurer half Corto Maltese and half Frank Zappa, or a neo-druid lost in the twenty-first century… This friendly weirdo who seems to come out of “Back to the Future” is – above all – author, composer, performer, Aries Aries ascendant, and he plays, among other instruments, self-deprecating and excess. As Captain Nemo of an unlikely ship, for two decades he delivers a rich and colorful music, flamboyant, powerful and retro-futuristic, somewhere between Chicago, Magma, Spirit, Genesis (Peter Gabriel period) and Stravinsky. Baroque, rock, jazz, pop, classical… Chardeau draws from all musical sources, provided they are good. Be interested in the artist, in the composer and his amazing musicianship!
On stage, Chardeau is a surprising entertainer. He plays his show with gleefully, gravity, intoxication, self-mocking, melancholy, humor, cynicism and excess… His concerts are too few : “Jean-Charles Edward, calls” (fragments of the diary of a worldly Tintin), a rock opera created in Paris in 1993 ; “Chardeau, it’s show” a multimedia tour in Quebec (the first “off” Francofolies of Montreal in 1997); some concerts in Berlin and Warsaw, a few festivals…
Super support of Robert Lamm!
It is not a secret, that Chardeau has long been a fan of the American legendary jazz-rock-pop-fusion band Chicago, to the point of identifying with Robert Lamm, keyboard, singer and songwriter of the band. A great personality of American music, that credits more than 160 songs (including the famous “25 or 6 to 4″), 32 albums with Chicago plus a dozen solo releases), Robert Lamm also became a big fan of Chardeau’s as well. A beautiful reciprocity then resulted with the presence of Robert and his friends on the last three studio albums of Chardeau.
